Luke 22

“The greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves.”  Vs 26

It’s coming to an end and Jesus seems to be focusing more and more on how He can equip His disciples for what is to come. They still appear to be wanting a powerful political takeover—Jesus is focused on how to respond once they discover His “kingdom is not of this world.” Two specific characteristics remain His priorities:

  1. How to truly serve when there’s no trouble, and
  2. How to truly respond when there is

  1. “If you want to be great in God’s kingdom, learn to be a servant of all…”

And,

  1. “Put away your weapon, He who lives by the sword, dies by the sword.”

Two principles quite contrary to what might feel like normal responses in this life, but Jesus calls me to something quite different than the responses of the world. If I want to be great then it seems I should be demonstrating greatness by acting like I’m great! Not so with Jesus; if I want to be great in His eyes I need to learn how to serve.

And when evil and wickedness attack I need to defend myself, or so it seems. But Jesus calls me to surrender not defeat. Not surrender to the evil and give in, but surrender to Him so He can do what He does best—save me.

As He comes to the end His focus for the survival of His disciples was two-fold—serve and surrender. Serve others; surrender to Him. He’ll take it from there.

Have a great day following Jesus’ plan for success,

Pastor Rich

Quote for the day:      “Sometimes I joke about what I’d do if I knew I had only one day left to live. Eat junk food, go crazy, etc. Then it hit me: Jesus KNEW He had only one day left to live: And He washed feet.”    Steve Bezner
