“Here is the conclusion of the matter…”       Ecclesiastes 12:13

Wise old Solomon; often called “the wisest man that ever lived,” came to the end of his life and summarized it all into two phrases and one conclusion:

1. “Fear God”
2. “Keep His commandments”

“For this is the WHOLE duty of man.”

If only he had remembered that through his whole life—if only I would remember that every day of my life!!

1. Fear, as I understand it, has to do more with respect and being in awe than it does to be afraid. So I conclude- respect God as God
2. Which commandments? “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. THIS is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it—love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang ALL the laws and the prophets.” Luke 10:27 and Matthew 22:36-40. That would be a good place to start.

There is the “WHOLE duty of man.” If it’s important to God it’s clear in His word! I wonder what would happen in my life if I respected God above everything else, loved Him with all I’ve got, and demonstrated that in how I loved EVERYONE else? I think I know!
