“Exceeding great and precious promises have been given to us, SO THAT…”          2 Peter 1:4

“If it’s important to God it’s clear in His word.” How many times have I said THAT in GMUs over the years. It’s still my “motus operandi” for focusing on God’s word. If it’s not clear then I don’t panic over it; maybe it’s not the right time or place for me to understand it right now. But when it IS clear, that’s where I perk up and thank God for giving me everything necessary to live today with the guidance of His word.

This was a verse that I was reviewing on my walk the other day and it keeps coming back so I figure I better write on it! Though I have never counted, I’ve heard many people say that there are 365 “promises” in God’s word; one for each day of the year. That’s pretty cool, and even if the number might not be exactly 365, there ARE still a LOT of promises. Peter says they are “exceedingly great and precious,” and he gives two clear reasons for the preciousness of those promises:

  1. “I can become a partaker in the Divine Nature”
  2. And “I can escape the corruption that is in the world caused by evil desires.”

If it’s important to God, it’s clear in His Word. God’s promises connect me directly to Him AND disconnect me with the junk of this world. I don’t care how many promises there are; if there are enough to accomplish those two things in my life then that’s good enough for me!

Promises like:

“I will never leave you or forsake you.”

“If you confess your sins He will forgive your sins.”

“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved.”

“Ask and it will be given you, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be opened.”

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your path.”

There are apparently 360 more, but these are the promises that came to my mind this morning as I sat back in my chair and listened to God. With them I can experience a literal part of God as I disconnect from “the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.” Even my verse for today is a promise so that means I only have 359 more to find!!

Have a great day finding and focusing on God’s promises,

Pastor Rich

PS        Operation Christmas Child boxes are now available in front of Campus Ministries. Pick up a box (or more) and a label, choose a gender and an age for your child and then go to some place like the Dollar Store and pack your shoebox full of goodies for kids who are living in war-torn or famine-stricken places around the world. It’s great fun and a great way to do something for someone else. Last year we packed over 200 boxes!! The only restrictions are no chocolate (it melts) and now guns or war toys. Make it fun and make a little child happy this Christmas!
