Am I a True Christian?

A basic definition for the word "Christian" is being a follower of Jesus Christ, yet how do I know if I am a true Christian? By what measure do I go by to determine whether I am one?

Jesus plainly told His disciples in John 13:35, “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples if ye have love one to another."

A Bible verse on my Instagram bio doesn’t prove that I am a Christian. A church membership and attendance every Sabbath doesn’t make me a Christian. Wearing a shirt that says “Follower of Christ” means nothing if my actions don’t align with the message. It is by actively living a life of love that I know I am a child of God and a true disciple of Christ.

Love not defined by the world, but as outlined in the word of God:

  • Love that strives to keep the Ten Commandments (Mark 12:30-31)

  • Love that is patient, kind, and doesn’t envy (1 Corinthians 13:4)

  • Love that will perform no evil to their neighbor (Romans 13:10)

  • Love that will bless their enemies and not curse them (Matthew 5:44)

  • Love that will give food to the hungry and clothes to those who lack (Matthew 25:35-40)

  • Love that is willing to lay down their lives for their friends (John 15:13)

The list can go on, but it captures the reality that we are to become vessels of love because we serve God who is the essence of love, 1 John 4:8, 16.

As we grow more in Christ through prayer and daily study of His Word, the loveliness of His character will be seen in us and through us. So the next time you are questioning whether you are a true Christian, ask yourself, “Can Christ’s love be seen through me?”
