Classroom Concerns

For various reasons, students may find it necessary to voice a concern related to a class. In those cases, issues should be addressed as follows:

  1. The student discusses the concern with the professor of the course, if appropriate. If not appropriate or the student remains dissatisfied, the student takes the concern to the program director (the professor’s direct supervisor).
  2. If not appropriate or the student remains dissatisfied, the student takes the concern to the program director (the professor’s direct supervisor). If still dissatisfied, the student takes the issue to the dean of the program the professor belongs to.
  3. If still dissatisfied, the student takes the issue to the dean of the program the professor belongs to. If the issue still remains unresolved, the student may request that the Vice President for Academic Administration help resolve the matter.
  4. If the issue still remains unresolved, the student may request that the Vice President for Academic Administration help resolve the matter.

Generative AI

Union recognizes the promise and challenge of generative artificial intelligence (AI), machines and programs that learn from input and are capable of producing text, image, audio, code, and more. Examples include ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini, Open AI Codex, DALL-E, Runway, etc.

Generative AI is an emerging and swiftly-evolving technology. At Union, we aim to support students’ generative AI literacy while maintaining the highest standards of ethical conduct. Syllabi provide course-specific policies for use or non-use, varying from discipline to discipline and even assignment to assignment. However, students may encounter guidelines such as the following:

Use prohibited—no generative AI may be used in the course. Students are expected to complete all assignments without significant support from others, including AI, except those technologies supplied through formal accommodations from the director of Disability Information and Access.

Use only with permission and guidance—generative AI may be used on assignments only with the professor’s expressed permission and guidance, which may include acknowledgement and/or documentation according to the discipline’s preferred documentation style (e.g., AP, AMA, APA, CMS, MLA, Turabian, etc.). Without permission, students are expected to complete all assignments without significant support from others, including AI, except those technologies supplied through formal accommodations from the director of Disability Information and Access.

Use unrestricted—generative AI may be freely used on assignments; no permission, guidance, acknowledgement, or documentation is required.

Unauthorized use of generative AI violates the University’s Academic Integrity Policy. See that policy for an explanation of violation levels and consequences.

Turnitin

To foster academic integrity by learning and applying ethical practices in research and writing, some courses use Turnitin software to generate a similarity report along with grammatical and mechanical guidance for students. This software compares your writing to the writing of other students in the Turnitin repository, internet sources, and academic databases. It also stores your submissions for future use. The goal of employing Turnitin is to help students develop a better grasp of their paraphrasing, summarizing, and citing skills.
