Campus family,
We have made it almost halfway through the semester, but today we have four COVID cases on campus and nearly 50 students in quarantine. So we have decided to implement additional recommendations from the county health department to help us contain the spread of COVID on campus.
Random COVID testing
Each week we will randomly select a group of students and employees to be tested at our campus testing center, which is open from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. If you are selected, you will receive an email with instructions on how to fill out the preform, receive your QR code and when to come for the test. The test itself will take about 10 minutes to complete.
This randomized testing is not mandatory. You may opt out. However, we know that 40 percent of COVID cases do not show symptoms and many more can spread the virus before showing symptoms. So we ask that each of you willingly participate in order to help us stop the spread and protect those who might get very sick. You may also volunteer to test at our campus testing center or at any TestNebraska site.
We plan to start the random testing tomorrow (Thursday, Sept. 17), so a few of you may receive a notification tomorrow morning for our Thursday afternoon testing time.
Please wear your mask when you gather with friends
Wearing your mask is the most important thing you can do to stop the spread of COVID. Our county has experienced zero spread of COVID-19 in classrooms—college, high school or elementary. That means the precautions we have taken are working. The spread is happening outside the classroom at social gatherings.
Please wear your mask—even when it's not required. Wear it indoors or outdoors if you are within six feet of someone. Stay six feet apart when eating. That includes in your dorm room (unless you are alone or with your roommate) or anywhere else.
Each of you are here because you value the Union College community and you thrive on the in-person learning, social and spiritual experiences on our campus. Together we can protect our community and stay together until Thanksgiving.
Thank you for making the difference.
Blessings,
Vinita Sauder
