Campus Family,
My heart is heavy at what has transpired in the last week. The death of George Floyd in Minnesota a week ago was shocking and devastating. We have seen too many similar stories of racial injustice and violence, and the time is long overdue for change. It is hard to believe we as a nation and a world have not made more strides towards true equality, but the devil is working overtime everywhere and the conflict of good and evil continues.
As people of Union College, we do not condone racist speech or racist conduct of any kind. We believe that each human being is created in the image of God, and is precious in His sight. With that in mind, we welcome people of all races and ethnicities and we strive to be a campus community where each individual is valued and respected.
I ask you to join me in condemning the violence plaguing our nation—both the protests gone awry and the systematic injustice that has led many to feel they have no other choice. Let's support each other. Many of us do not know what it is like to be racially profiled and worried about our family and whether they will be safe driving home, or even walking in a neighborhood. We need to listen to each other and learn. I’m grateful for those that are speaking up for what is right, speaking up when others are wronged, negotiating peacefully, being patient with others, and educating others.
As a college community, let’s pray for peace, justice, reconciliation, and hope for the future. Let’s care for each other during this time. Even though we may be separated by the summer break and by Covid-19, please check in with your friends and colleagues. We are a community of believers in the ministry of Christ who exemplified love for all. Let's continue to care for each other and our neighbors. I challenge all of us to be the kind of “Warrior” Jesus exemplified when He stood up for the oppressed and dedicated His life to healing the hurting.
Blessings to you,
Vinita Sauder
